Reading Travel Narratives and Literature by Swedish Women: From the Perspective of the "Neutral Core"

Initiated by artist Jee-Eun Kim in collaboration with Malmö Fria Kvinnouniversitet

On Thursday, 16th November 2006, an introduction to a reading group on travel narratives and literatures by Swedish women will be held at ABF. This reading group is created to provide a flexible framework in which to examine narrative strategies involved in story telling, history making, and reinterpreting past/future histories. It is also a space to engage in in-depth analysis of certain texts, and by participating in a group reading experience, to try and answer the question: Why do we tell the stories we tell? And related to this, is "how do we read the stories that are told?"

The selected readings are categorized into two sections. One group of texts is centered on literatures examining the idea of authorship, representation, and production of histories. Texts to be discussed include writings by: Gayatri Spivak, Michele Wallace, Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, and Ernesto Laclau. The second group is comprised of literary and historical narratives by women such as Favell Lee Mortimer, Edith Södergran, Moa Martinson, Cora Sandel, Dorrit Willumsen, Moa Matthis, and Sunmin Lee.

On 16th November we will meet 19.00 at ABF. At this meeting, we will discuss the overall structure of the reading group, the inter-relatedness of the texts, and also the strategies in which to structure the reading sessions. Also at this meeting, we will read together a text by Gayatri Spivak on "Who Claims Alterity." The reading group will continue with regular meetings every fortnight (30th November, 14th December in 2006. The group will have a short pause for winter holidays and resume again January 2007).

To sign up please send an e-mail to: info.mfk@gmail.com, stating your name, e-mail and mobile. Let us know before November 6 and we will send you more information about the readings.

Best regards, Jee-Eun Kim and MFK.
